Is Omega 3 Fish Oil Dangerous To Your Health?

Omega 3 is generally not considered dangerous by itself, but there have been several recent lawsuits against top Omega 3 fish-oil supplement manufacturers over the presence of dangerous PCBs levels in their supplements which are known to cause cancer.  Additionally, other dangerous substances, including high levels of Mercury, have been found in potentially dangerous quantities in many of the more inexpensive Omega 3 supplements.

So, what are PCBs, anyway, and why should you care about this?  I mean, don’t we trust the FDA with stuff like this?

PCBs, or properly: Polychlorinated biphenyls, are toxic man-made chemicals.  The production of these chemicals were banned by the US Congress in 1979 and later also banned by the international community in 2001.  So don’t treat them lightly.

One might think that organizations like the FDA would have better protected consumers, but a recent post by Dr. Stephen Chaney Ph.D., Professor of Biochemistry & Biophysics, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, strongly suggests otherwise.

The bottom line is that you need to be very careful when dealing with Omega 3 fish-oil supplements!

Does ALA really convert well?

One of the first issues that I’d encoutered while researching Omega 3 ALA (that’s the component found in the Salvia Sclarea oil) was that most studies dating from the mid-late 2000′s had hypothesized that ALA wouldn’t convert well into DHA and EPA (the components found in deep-sea fish livers), a recent study in 2008, called the Firefighter Study, claims otherwise.  The firefighter study showed that intake of 2.4-3.6 grams p/day, over a 3 month period, of plant-based Omega 3 ALA converted into the necessary amounts of DHA that is required by the human body.  The study was done on firefighters since they’re around large amounts of smoke and therefore have a high susceptibility to cardiovascular disorders.

Research on Omega 3 and ALA – Part I

Today I got the first information packet from Marvalous.  I’ve attached a massive research pack on the Omega 3 product specifically and another small article on ALA in general. Hopefully, there will be plenty more to come as well as some “layman term” explanations on what I’ve found.

Why Marvalous?

Before joining Marvalous, I want to do my homework.  Real due dilligence…

This evening I got around to contacting the company and asked them for medical research and patent information in general and specifically on the Omega 3 products.  Since the primary researcher is affiliated with the Weizmann Scientific Institute in Israel, I expect to get lots of Hebrew information as well as English.  Can’t wait to see what we get after the weekend…

Oh My Omega!

Today, I was introduced to a new Omega 3 product, being distributed through Multi-Level Marketing. The product is cool and interesting, and they claim to have a patent on the way they extract Omega 3 rich oil from plants (not fish!).

I haven’t actually been active in an MLM in a while, but somehow I ended up with my interest piqued.

Now don’t get me wrong: it’s my sincere belief that it’s neither the product nor the comp plan that makes an MLM business successful or not; rather it’s the leaders in the distributor force. Being that this is still pretty ground-floor (my understanding is that we haven’t hit 1,000 top-level-executive signups quite yet), it seems like an exciting challenge.

Last time I jioned an MLM, I had legends like Eric Worre and Randy Gage in my immediate upline (both were within 7 levels above me, I think). Let’s see what I learn from them…

But I’m getting a bit ahead of myself. Like I siad, I think it’s the leadership that’s gonna make it or break it, but the product and the comp plan have to be solid if I want a decently easy chance at making a marketing campaign that my downline can duplicate without me… Time for some homework…

PS If any of you use Omega 3 at all, I’d love to hear your thought on the subject… Thanks
